The Pugs
Our start in the pug breed came as an accident. We had been having some
success showing our danes and one evening, after a dog club meeting, we were
approached by Joy DeVoe who asked if we would be willing to handle for her.
She had been employing a professional handler in another state to show her
dogs, but according to her, often the handler had conflicts and her dog
didn't get into the ring. As it turned out although she was new to pugs,
Joy had had 20 years experience breeding Arabian Horses and she had a good
eye for conformation. I confessed that I knew nothing about showing Pugs,
or any dog that had to be shown on a table for that matter, but it was OK
with her and worth a try for us.
Joy had a bitch named Lucy who she said "at least wouldn't jump off the
table" and she entered Lucy for a pair of shows in Waukesha, WI. On the
Saturday show Joy and her friend watched me place 4th out of 4 in the open
fawn class. On Sunday Joy could not go because she had to work and so I
took Lucy alone. We won the open fawn class. We won winners bitch. We won
best of winners. We won best of breed. By golly, we even placed 4th in the
toy group! I had become a pug dog handler!
Over the next couple years we finished several of Joy's dogs and had a lot
of fun doing it. As a token of appreciation, Joy gave us a puppy bitch out
of Ch Lucy and we named her FMA Highland Double Stuff. Stuffy became our
foundation Pug bitch.
